Billie Eilish Stopped Reading Instagram Comments As She Revealed It Was "Ruining" Her Life
This week, Billie Eilish shared that she's had to change how she engages with the social media platform because of hateful comments online... here's what she said!
Billie Eilish is already having a pretty big year! After sweeping the GRAMMYs and performing the theme song for the new James Bond film No Time to Die, Eilish's career is hotter than ever.
Unfortunately, she's found that with newfound success also comes her fair share of online haters... and it's forced her to change how she engages with Instagram. "It was ruining my life,” she admitted in an interview with the BBC this Tuesday. “I stopped two days ago. Literally, two days ago. I stopped reading comments fully.”
Eilish on online haters: it's "way worse than it's ever been"
Eilish made GRAMMYs history last month, becoming the youngest person ever to win the award show's four major categories (Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year). Because of this fact, Eilish says, the online hate she gets is "way worse than it's ever been right now". She shares that she's come to realize "the cooler the things you get to do are the more people hate you. It’s crazy.”
Eilish discusses her complicated relationship with social media
Still, Eilish is upset that feeling the need to distance herself from online comments has affected her relationship with her fans. "I’ve always wanted to stay in touch with the fans and keep talking to them — people have ruined that for me. And for them. They’ve ruined it for them and that sucks".
Even though she says that she does try to acknowledge fans online by giving their post a "like" and wants to "talk to them and be around them because they're people", Eilish is tired of the social media backlash. "And so, they’re like friends of mine but, yeah, the Internet is ruining my life," Eilish said. "So, I turned it off.”
