Ever since her kidnapping in 2002, Elizabeth Smart has been a woman warrior fighting for victims of abuse and empowering women and children everywhere. Today she spreads awareness, encourages self-defense, and is even a correspondent with Chris Hansen on True Crime Daily (formerly Crime Watch Daily).

Elizabeth Smart is a powerhouse of a woman who strongly stands in her power and speaks for victims.

From Victim To Fighter, Elizabeth Smart

Her name was first in the headlines in 2002 when she was kidnapped and held captive for almost a year at age 14. She is now a public speaker, child safety advocate and a special correspondent for True Crime Daily (formerly Crime Watch Daily). She investigates and conducts interviews for sensitive cases she feels strongly about.

Many of her interviewees had suffered similarly, like kidnap victim Amanda Berry or Larry Nassars' victims, and she helps build them up and shows them they are not alone.

Elizabeth Smart talks to the press outside of federal court after the sentencing of Elizabeths kidnapper Brian David Mitchell May 25, 2011 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Over the summer I was sleeping on a flight back from a presentation, I woke up to the man sitting next to me rubbing my inner thigh. The last time I woke up to a stranger inappropriately touching me was when I woke up to Brian Mitchell holding a knife to my neck telling me to get up and go with him, which lead to my captivity for the next nine months. So as you can imagine I woke up not just startled but scared. When I jerked awake and looked at him he neither removed his hand nor apologized. I had to move his hand off me. For the rest of the flight I sat in shock, anger, and frustration with myself for once again freezing. It made me feel like I must have "good target victim" written across my forehead! How could this be happening to me again?! I reported the man to both Delta Airlines and the FBI. But what's more it completely changed the focus of my foundation @elizabethsmartfoundation I have since enlisted the help of fighters and law enforcement officers to help develop a self defense program for women and girls. Today on @dr_oz this afternoon is a more detailed account of what happened and a short demo of some of the moves we teach. I invite all women, girls, mothers, daughters, and friends to go check out www.elizabethsmartfoundation.org to learn more about "Smart Defense." #victimnomore #enough #smartdefense #survivor #hope

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to speak at the "crimes against women conference." I never cease to be amazed by the dedication, drive, and humanity so many show towards to victims. That being said it is never easy coming forward, there will always be those who are insensitive or maybe don't even believe you. I want to take this opportunity to tell you, you deserve to be happy, you deserve to be loved, and there is nothing anyone else can do to you that make you less of a person or decrease your value as a human being. It does not matter whether you are kidnapped from your bed in the middle of the night and raped or have been in a relationship and your partner raped you it is NEVER your fault, it is a crime, and you are not alone!!! Please don't give up, peace, happiness, and healing are all possible. I don't think there is anything more resilient than the human spirit, believe in yourself!! #survivor #nevergiveup #miracleshappen #hope
