VelJohnson's career started way before he joined the cast of Family Matters. He played the role of a municipal corrections officer in Ghostbusters (1984) which can be seen as the first role that shaped Veljohnson for similar principal characters in the future. He also played "Sgt. Al Powell" in the film Die Hard (1988) and Die Hard 2 (1990). From 1989 until 1998, he then played THE role of his career as the fun and loving patriarch of the "Winslow" clan on Family Matters.

Ever since his time on the sitcom, VelJohnson has done mostly theater work. He also wrote some critically acclaimed short stories called Division Street. Of these, Sunday Evening Haircut, was made into a short film in 2005, which starred VelJohnson himself. VelJohnson has also made guest appearances in many TV shows, including The Equalizer, Diagnosis: Murder, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, That's So Raven, and Bones.
In 2007, he starred in the short films Reverse, Nerve Endings, and Time Upon A Once. The following year he appeared as his former "Sgt. Al Powell" character from the 1988 Die Hard series in an episode of Chuck. In 2010, VelJohnson started a major role as the principal on the Disney sitcom I'm in the Band.

VelJohnson was the subject of an internet hoax in February 2017 when a website reported that the actor had died as a result of a heart attack. VelJohnson took to Twitter to show he was alive and doing well.
