Justin Bieber Opens Up About Lyme Disease And Past Addictions
Justin Bieber's got a new 10-part YouTube series out, and in it, he's being completely transparent about his struggles over the past few years... including with his health. Find out more!
Justin Bieber is being more honest with fans than ever before about his life! In his new YouTube documentary series, titled Justin Bieber: Seasons, he's chronicling his return to the recording studio after a four-year hiatus, as well as openly discussing the mental and physical struggles he's endured along the way.
The first four episodes of the series saw Bieber sharing what the creative process for his comeback album Changes was like, reflecting on overcoming a dark time in his life and his romance with new wife Hailey Bieber, née Baldwin.
Now, in episode 5 of Seasons, Bieber has opened up even further, talking about his current health issues and past substance abuse in detail.

Justin's spiral into addiction started at a shockingly young age
Bieber's rawest episode of his docuseries yet begins with a trigger warning, letting viewers know that the episodes contain "raw and honest discussions about addiction and anxiety". Then, Justin shares how he first tried weed when he was only 13 years old, finding himself becoming reliant on it at such a young age. "That’s when I realized I had to stop,” Bieber says.
However, instead of stopping, weed was only the first step in what became a downhill spiral of finding vice after vice as a form of escapism. He reveals how he started drinking a narcotic substance called "lean" that's also known as "purple drank" or "sizzurp", as well as taking pills, doing marijuana, and trying shrooms.
Bieber's health eventually took such a rapid decline that it couldn't be ignored. His security team would come into his room in the middle of the night to check his pulse and make sure he was still alive, since come morning he'd be back to doing drugs another day.
In 2014, he started seeing a doctor who specialized in brain health, Dr. Daniel Amen. Dr. Amen recognized that Bieber was not in a good place mentally, identifying that he suffered from chronic stress and anxiety.
In addition to seeking treatment for his mental health, the documentary also shows Bieber getting what's called a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide IV treatment. As his wife Hailey explains, it's meant to help recovering drug addicts repair their brains when they're in a sober state.
“I have abused my body in the past and now I am just in the recovery process, trying to make sure I am taking care of my body and taking care of the vessel that God’s given me,” Bieber said, reflecting on his past decisions.
Justin's hidden battle with Lyme disease and mono
Bieber also is transparent about the fact he's been dealing with two health conditions: Lyme disease, and Epstein-Barr (EBV), more commonly known as mononucleosis. Before his YouTube series was released, Bieber made an Instagram post addressing his diagnosis, which he told fans he would address more in Seasons.
Bieber reveals that after having struggled with keeping his energy up for quite a while, and taking some medical tests to determine what was going on, he discovered that he had Lyme disease.
The mono diagnosis is more recent, coming shortly after Bieber was erroneously diagnosed with bipolar disorder and given lithium. However, Bieber's wife Hailey says that taking everything into consideration, Justin's health is on a much better track "now that we have all the answers and know how to alleviate it and fix it. I think he’s honestly not only healthier than he’s ever been, but he’s on the road to maintaining a healthier life than he ever has".
