Marilyn Monroe graced the cover of the first ever issue of playboy in 1953! But the photos, which show her naked on red velvet, had already been taken in 1949 by photographer Tom Kelley. They were published for the first time in a 1952 calendar. The photos caused quite a scandal as many of her fans hadn't known that she had been a pin-up girl before becoming an actress. The scandal worked in her favour though, as the "bad press" only served to boost her career even further.
Monroe's marriage to baseball player Joe DiMaggio in 1954 only lasted nine months. One of the reasons for their separation was his extreme jealousy. He supposedly caused a huge scene while she was shooting Subway Grate. There were hundreds of bystanders watching and DiMaggio couldn't cope with his beautiful wife's growing fame.
Her third and final marriage was to the famous playwright Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman) from 1956 to 1961.
