Mindy Kaling Reveals Her Parents Got Cast During Diwali Episode on 'The Office'
Mindy Kaling played the talkative, pop culture obsessed "Kelly Kapoor" in the classic comedy series The Office. This week, the actress revealed how they cast her very own parents in the hilarious Diwali episode!
The perfect role!
Mindy Kaling was the perfect choice to play the hilarious iconic character from The Office, "Kelly Kapoor." As it turns out, her parents were also the perfect choice to be cast as "Kapoor's" parents!
In this week's episode of The Office Ladies podcast, Kaling revealed that the episode that featured "Kelly Kapoor's" parents were her actual real-life parents.
"We only cast my parents in it, which just seems like a complete act of nepotism and favouritism, because we had auditioned the parts and [show-runner] Greg [Daniels] felt that the actors we found in that age group were either too theatrical for the style of acting on our show or too stilted because they had no acting experience," she revealed.
She continued, "Now, I’m the first to say that my parents’ acting was also very stilted. But [Greg] was like, ‘At least they bear some familial resemblance to you. So, we’ll put them in there.'"
Kaling also revealed how she convinced Greg Daniels to do the "Diwali" episode that centred around the very important Hindu holiday.
"We couldn’t believe Greg said yes," Kaling said.
“I had to kind of confront the fact that I’m Indian American, I don’t know very much about the holiday, and the bad experience of being Indian American and talking about how you don’t know very much about the holiday kind of became a big part of the episode, which I loved," she added.
She continued about the episode, "I like that Greg thought that it was just as interesting, if not more interesting than me going and pretending that my family and I were these experts at Hindu holidays."
She also noted that she felt a connection to her character in that episode.
"I really like that Kelly has this defiant attitude about it, that it’s really important, while also not knowing anything about it at all," she said.
Kaling is now producing the Netflix original series Never Have I Ever, and on Wednesday it was announced it would be renewed for a second season.
