Spike Lee Apologizes For Defending Woody Allen From Backlash
After Spike Lee faced criticism for his defense of Woody Allen, he issued an apology on Twitter. This is why he regrets voicing his support for the controversial director!
Spike Lee is apologizing for having recently made a statement in support of Woody Allen! As People reports, Lee spoke with WOR radio show In The Morning on Friday about the controversy surrounding Allen, whose daughter Dylan Farrow accused him of sexual abuse. But while he initially showed support for the director, Lee later walked back his comments.
Lee expressed regret for his words on Allen and cancel culture
Lee's initial statement on the controversy against Allen came from his personal relationship to the filmmaker and his work. "I'd just like to say Woody Allen is a great, great filmmaker, and this cancel thing is not just Woody," he said.
"When we look back on it, we are going to see that you can't just erase someone like they never existed. He's a friend of mine and I know he's going through it right now." However, Lee soon found himself on the receiving end of online backlash and regretted his choice of words, taking to Twitter to make a public apology.
"I Deeply Apologize. My Words Were WRONG. I Do Not And Will Not Tolerate Sexual Harassment, Assault Or Violence," Lee tweeted on Sunday. "Such Treatment Causes Real Damage That Can't Be Minimized.-Truly, Spike Lee." Farrow later retweeted Lee's apology, publicly thanking him for coming forward.
