Over 20 years later and Mel C of the Spice Girls is releasing new music, something she says will represent a new chapter in her life. Formerly Sporty Spice, Mel C is opening up about what inspired her new tunes.

It's been 23 years since "Wannabe" hit the radio waves, and the time when Mel C of the Spice girls shot up to superstardom! Now 46, Mel C wants to create a new chapter for herself, and is set to release a new solo album!

Now determined to be someone else other than Sporty Spice, this new self-titled album is one she hopes will allow fans and new listeners to see a different side of her.

A self-titled solo album for Mel C

After rising to fame in 1996 for being the notorious Sporty Spice, Melanie Chisholm is retiring that image, and creating a new stage presence!

Last year, Mel said she joined the rest of the girls (with the exception of Victoria Beckham) on their UK and Ireland tour, and said that it was during this time "she felt a wave of self-acceptance" that she had never felt before.

"When I went on stage with the girls, it was such an incredible experience," Mel said to People. "It made me feel very reflective. I loved being Sporty Spice again, and I realize that she's such a huge part of who I am as a person and who I am as a performer. I wanted to really celebrate that."

She added, "We felt a lot of pride on stage together because we realized the impact that we, as a band, had on this generation of people. I started thinking about my life, my career and my personal life."

Working on her upcoming 8th solo album, she shared it was that experience that was channelled into her new music.

"I wanted the album to be empowering," she said. "I wanted to make an album people would want to dance to, but I also wanted to make people listen and hopefully be empowered in the way I feel."

The album, which is set to be released this Friday, is a fusion of disco-pop sounds and includes her single "Who I Am", which was written as a way for her to explore the different phases of her life.

"When we're kids, we're often the essence of who we truly are, and then we grow up, we go through our teens, and our early 20s, and there are so much influence and expectation put on us," she explained.

"I just came to this point where I thought, 'It's time to embrace everything. The good and the bad,'" she continued. "I felt like 'Who I Am' was a perfect introduction to the album because it's about dropping your armour and being comfortable in your own skin. It's a really important song to me."
