Gulager later moved on to a notable role in The Last Picture Show (1971) and the 1977 drama The Other Side of Midnight opposite Susan Sarandon. In 1981, he starred as "Chase Gioberti" alongside Jane Wyman and Lorenzo Lamas in the pilot episode of The Vintage Years, which was picked up with the new title Falcon Crest by CBS. Unfortunately for Gulager, he was replaced as "Chase" by Robert Foxworth.
In 1985, he was cast in the cult classic The Return of the Living Dead, but as the years went on, the bigger roles were not offered to Gulager anymore. He did, however, have regular guest spots on a number of popular TV productions like North and South, Murder, She Wrote, MacGyver, Walker, Texas Ranger and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.
