Harry and Meghan Encourage Americans To Vote In New 'TIME 100' Speech
During their recent appearance at the TIME 100 Most Influential People broadcast, Harry and Meghan addressed some important topics! They spoke about the importance of positive online engagement, as well as urged American citizens to cast their ballots. See the video here!
Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan encouraged Americans to get out and vote during their most recent virtual appearance! As Hello! reports, the couple participated in the TIME 100 Most Influential People broadcast on September 22, where the 100 recipients of the magazine's honour this year were revealed.
Harry and Meghan were part of TIME 100 in 2018
Harry and Meghan's two-minute long video for the broadcast saw them sitting together on a wooden bench in a beautiful outdoor setting— presumably their new Santa Barbara home. At one point, their black Labrador retriever, Pula, could be seen wandering around in the background! As Hello! mentions, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were honoured by TIME magazine in 2018, being named part of the TIME 100 for that year.
Meghan spoke about the importance of having a collective approach to communication with others. "Seeing our world through the lens of community is so important," she said. "Because we need to redraw the lines of how we engage with each other — both online and off." Harry agreed with her, saying how "it's vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity."
Harry and Meghan talk about importance of voting
Harry and Meghan also made sure to talk about the fact that the American election is coming up soon! The couple mentioned that September 22 was National Voter Registration Day in the United States. "Let's challenge ourselves to build communities of compassion," Meghan said.
Even though Harry isn't able to vote in the United States, and has never voted himself due to being part of the royal family, he echoed Meghan's sentiment. "Tonight reminds us how important it is to watch out for each other," he said, "to care for each other and to inspire each other."
Harry and Meghan have used their platform for good
Harry and Meghan have previously been outspoken about both topics they addressed in their TIME 100 video before! Last month, the couple talked about kindness in the digital community during a video call with youth leaders from the Queen's Commonwealth Trust. Meghan also took part in an online event that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, where she made some political remarks.
As Hello! shares, the TIME 100 gala had never been broadcast on television before, but the coronavirus pandemic meant Tuesday's event couldn't take place in person this year. The event also featured guest appearances from many celebrities, including Sandra Oh, Trevor Noah, Kumail Nanjiani, and John Legend. Jennifer Hudson, The Weeknd, and Halsey also performed!
