It's the Queen and Prince Philip's 71st wedding anniversary today!
It's hard to believe, but the Queen and Prince Philip are celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary today and it's lovely to see that they are still going strong!
Queen Elizabeth II (92) first met Prince Philip (97) when she was just thirteen years old. The Queen is rumoured to have fallen in love with the handsome young Philip on the spot and the couple began exchanging letters. Prince Philip would often came to visit her family at Windsor Castle, but it wasn't until Christmas 1943 that their romance truly started to blossom. The young couple got engaged secretly in 1946, but King George VI only granted Philip Elizabeth's hand in marriage on the promise that a formal engagement wait for Elizabeth’s 21st birthday. Their engagement was officially announced on 9th July 1947.
They got married on 20th November 1947 at Westminster Abbey and their relationship is the longest running in the history of the Royal Family.
While Prince Philip and the Queen celebrated their platinum anniversary in style last year with a black-tie reception for one hundred family members and friends at Windsor Castle, this year the couple will be celebrating in private.
The Duke of Edinburgh has officially retired, but the Queen has not and so must she must visit the Headquarters of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Parliament Square to mark the 150th anniversary of its Royal Charter today.
However, we are sure that once she has fulfilled her official duties she will have plenty to celebrate with Prince Philip! This year was an eventful one for them after all, two of their grandchildren got married, two great-grandchildren were born, and the happy news was announced that another great-grandchild is on its way. We wish them both many happy more years together!
