Kate Middleton surprised tennis fans when she featured as the narrator of a video posted in honour of what would've been Day 1 of Wimbledon 2020. Listen to the Duchess of Cambridge's uplifting message in the video below.

The Duchess of Cambridge is helping tennis fans come to terms with the absence of Wimbledon in 2020.

Kate Middleton spoke on the cancelled tennis tournament in a video that was shared to Wimbledon's Twitter account on Monday—what would have been Day 1 of the annual event. As narrator of the video, the Duchess reflected on the time that elapsed since Wimbledon 2019, and why it's essential that the tournament was cancelled for 2020.

"350 days, 14 hours and 12 minutes between the last ball hit and when the next was meant to be," Kate began.

"Over the years your support has shaped this historic event. No matter the time of day or the names on the scoreboard, you have always been there, come rain or shine.

"This year sadly though things are very different, but we will bide our time until we sit on the edge of our seats again and celebrate again. So, when the time is right and we open the gates, we will be back again and it will have been worth the wait," the message concluded.

"It will be worth the wait," restated Wimbledon's caption for the video. The 2021 edition of the tournament is scheduled for one year from this past Sunday, taking place June 28 - July 11, 2021.

While Kate's message should provide solace to tennis fans, the Duchess herself and the royal family are likely missing the tournament as well. Kate is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, and she has regularly attended Wimbledon since marrying Prince William. Over the years, she's been spotted with the Duke of Cambridge and with Meghan Markle taking in matches from front-row seats.

Kate's presence at Wimbledon was also elevated in 2019, when she presented the Men's Singles trophy to Serbia's Novak Djokovic at last year's tournament.

In the meantime, the tennis tournament has encouraged fans and enthusiasts of the sport to re-create Wimbledon from home. Fans sent in at-home tennis videos using the Twitter hashtag #WimbledonRecreated.

The above fans are no doubt counting down to Wimbledon 2021 along with Duchess Catherine. The 2020 tournament would've ran June 29 to July 12, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It's Wimbledon's first cancellation since the Second World War era.
