Kristen Stewart has landed the coveted role in a personal new film centred on Princess Diana. Here's what we know so far about the upcoming movie, which is titled Spencer.

Kristen Stewart will bring to the screen an important weekend in the life of Princess Diana.

Today, it was confirmed that the 30-year-old American actress will star in Spencer, an upcoming movie that focuses on Lady Di's decision to end her marriage with Prince Charles.

Deadline broke the news in an exclusive report, which specified that Spencer will cover an early 1990s Christmas weekend when Diana decided that her marriage to Charles needed to come to an end.

The royal couple officially divorced in 1996, and Diana later died in a car crash the next year at the age of 36.

It's expected that production of the film will launch in early 2021. Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraíne will serve as director with a script from English screenwriter and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

Some of Larraíne's previous titles include Jackie - a film about Jacqueline Kennedy - and Neruda - about Pablo Neruda - so he's well-versed in dramas about historical figures.

Director Pablo Lorraíne also spoke to Deadline as part of the announcement. He addressed the film's focus, saying, "Diana is such a powerful icon, where millions and millions of people, not just women, but many people around the world felt empathy toward her in her life.

"We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen. She's a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles," the filmmaker explained.

"It's about finding herself, about understanding that possibly the most important thing for her is to be well, and to be with herself and by herself. That's why the movie is called Spencer, which is the family name she had before she met Charles."

Time will tell if Spencer joins the ranks of royal cinema and TV favourites such as The Queen, The King's Speech, and Netflix's The Crown!
