Orlando Bloom Talks Playing Prince Harry In New Royal TV Satire
Orlando Bloom has revealed his history with Prince Harry ahead of voicing the royal in upcoming HBO Max animated comedy, The Prince. It turns out he's met the Duke of Sussex and, jokingly, fears future encounters with him once the satire airs. Read on to see his comments and preview the new series.
Orlando Bloom is the voice of Prince Harry in HBO Max's The Prince — an animated satire of the British Royal Family.
The series comes from Family Guy writer Gary Janetti, who has amassed a following for his Instagram mockery of the royals. His upcoming series centres on Prince George, but the notable voice cast includes English star Orlando Bloom as Prince Harry.
Orlando Bloom on meeting "nice guy" Prince Harry
Bloom spoke about The Prince during a recent interview with THR, which came to promote his new movie, Retaliation. He revealed his initial reservations about the role, saying, "I'm a British boy who's very proud my roots."
"I'm not someone who wants to poke fun at anyone normally, but this was so clever, witty and affectionately done," Bloom said of The Prince. And it turns out he has a personal connection to Prince Harry, too, having recently met him.
"I hadn't met him when I signed up to do [The Prince], and I subsequently met him and he's such a nice guy. This guy is so nice, and I think he's got a great sense of humor.
"I hope he maintains that through this because they're sort of on a pedestal. We're showing real adoration to them in one form or another," Bloom added.
HBO Max's The Prince
In the THR interview, Bloom joked that he dreads the occasion when he'll encounter Prince Harry after the show airs. "I'm going to have to mention it to Prince Harry when I next see him, because I'm not going to be able to not. Oddly, I'm sure I'm going to see him at some point, just because of the nature of the universe, it always throws people together."
There's still no firm release date on The Prince yet, but Janetti did share a preview of what's to come back in April. In the short clip, a fast-talking Prince George, perhaps akin to "Stewie Griffin," discusses royal life in self-isolation.
HBO launched its now successful streaming service, HBO Max, back in May, but it for now remains available only to U.S. customers. Since then, it's had its share of controversies, namely the Gone with the Wind episode, and some have already criticized The Prince based on Janetti's attempts at humour on Instagram.
A previous report stated that The Prince's availability to U.K. viewers likely depends on an HBO Max global expansion, which has yet to happen. Joining Bloom and Janetti in the voice cast are Condola Rashad, Lucy Punch, Tom Hollander, Alan Cumming, Frances de la Tour, and Iwan Rheon.
