According to a new biography, Princess Diana once said that the only thing Prince Charles ever "learned about love was shaking hands". The new book Prince Philip Revealed describes how Charles unaffectionate childhood with his parents caused a "emotional retentiveness" in him. Read on and find out all about the new book and the excerpts published in the Mail on Sunday.

Princess Diana once said that the only thing her former husband Prince Charles "learned about love was shaking hands,” a new biography called Prince Philip Revealed claims. Some excerpts from the book by royal biographer Ingrid Seward were released this past weekend in the Mail on Sunday and shed some light on how Charles was brought up by his parents.

Princess Diana on Charles: "Emotional retentiveness"

Seward claims that Prince Charles, because of his unaffectionate upbringing, "couldn't be tactile with his own wife". The late Princess Diana also told the author that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip showed almost no affection for their son which caused an "emotional retentiveness" in him.

Ingrid Seward writes in her book: "Diana reckoned that if Charles had been brought up in the normal fashion, he would have been better able to handle his and her emotions. Instead, she said, his feelings seemed to have been suffocated at birth. According to her, he never had any hands-on love from his parents."

She continues: "Only his nannies showed him affection but that, as Diana explained, was not the same as being kissed and cuddled by your parents, which Charles never was. When he met his parents, they didn’t embrace: they shook hands."

Royal Affairs: What Used To Be "Normal" Is Now A Dealbreaker

Seward, a veteran royal biographer not only describes how Charles was separated from his parents for long stretches of time ("Even when judged by the standards of the time, Philip and Elizabeth saw remarkably little of their offspring,” she writes), but also how his father Prince Philip saw Prince Harry's royal exit as a "dereliction of duty".

Prince Philip Revealed by Ingrid Seward will be released on October 20, 2020.
