Princess Diana and Prince Charles had always wanted a daughter, but they weren't lucky enough to have one. Unfortunately, Diana did not live long enough to become a grandmother either...

On May 2 2015, Prince William and Duchess Kate welcomed their daughter, Princess Charlotte to the world. Her grandmother, Princess Diana (†36), unfortunately could not witness the moment. The "People's Princess" died in August of 1997 in a tragic accident.

Diana's close friend, businesswoman Rosa Monckton (66), tweeted the following on the day Princess Charlotte was born: "How Diana would have loved a grand daughter."

Rosa Monckton: "She would have been the most magnificent grandmother"

As early as 2013, when Prince George was born, Rosa Monckton wrote a piece for the Daily Mail: "Seeing photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge shopping for baby clothes with her mother made me terribly sad that Diana wasn’t around to be part of the ritual and fun of the run-up to the birth."

"She would have been the most magnificent grandmother and it makes me ineffably sad she will not be a part of the royal baby’s life," Monckton wrote about Princess Diana.

Rosa Monckton was made an MBE in 2017.

Prince Charles wanted to name a daughter after his grandmother

It is said that it was Princess Diana's husband Prince Charles, who really wished for a daughter at the time. He actually wanted to name her Elizabeth - after his grandmother Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Charles was supposedly quite disappointed when his second child, Prince Harry, also turned out to be a boy in 1984.

Today, the Prince of Wales is obviously delighted with his sons Prince William and Prince Harry. The fact that he now finally has a granddaughter - little Charlotte Elizabeth Diana - makes him all the happier. Charles also gets on very well with his daughter-in-law Meghan Markle, with whom he shares a close bond.
