Sarah Ferguson opened up in an interview with Vogue about how media negativity over the years took a toll on her mental health and well-being. She revealed that she eventually "self-sabotaged" as she "didn't think of the ramifications" of her actions.
Sarah Ferguson: "I was at the bottom of the barrel"
"I was at the bottom of the barrel. It was almost as if I wanted to be unlovable," the Duchess explained. She then went on to say that it was when she was at the bottom that she wrote her book, Finding Sarah. This was a very vulnerable time for her where she had to open up and be honest with herself.
Sarah Ferguson has been open about her mental health
Sarah has been very open about her mental health, having appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and making a six-episode mental health series called Finding Sarah. "It was difficult but I'm here now - I feel the chains of my soul are freed," she stated. Despite where she is at now, Sarah admitted that she still gets "self-esteem issues and self-doubt."
The Duchess also revealed in the interview that watching her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, experience the same type of media scrutiny is very difficult.
