After the news of the tragedy hit, the Queen's sincere message to all those affected by the crash read: "It was with great sadness that I heard of the train derailment earlier today in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire."

"The Duke of Edinburgh, and the entire Royal Family, join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to the families of those who have died and those who have been injured. Our thanks go out to the emergency services for their response and dedication."

The derailment is currently thought to have been caused by a landslide due to heavy rains and thunderstorms that hit Scotland in the past days. All across the country, there have been cases of flooding, and travel was disrupted because of the intense weather conditions.
