Today, Queen Elizabeth II placed a special call to Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand. Afterward, the PM shared a photo on Instagram that commented on the call and the Queen's impressive memory. See it below...

Queen Elizabeth II surprised New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, with an in-depth chat on Tuesday.

Her Majesty had earlier let Ardern know that she wanted to check in on how New Zealand was doing amid the COVID-19 crisis. But the Queen and the politician shared an affectionate and engaging conversation, as Ardern revealed in an Instagram post after the call.

The caption of Ardern's Instagram post relates her pleasant experience chatting with the Queen.

"A few days ago we got a wee note to say that the Queen wanted to catch up and see how everyone in New Zealand was getting on in the midst of COVID-19," the post read.

"It was such a treat to speak with Her Majesty tonight. Her affection for New Zealand, her interest in what’s happening here and her memory of places and events that are special to us never ceases to amaze me."

It seems that the Queen, who turned 94-years-old last week, may have caught Ardern off-guard with her ever-sharp memory and attention to New Zealand culture!

Queen Elizabeth II follows up on coronavirus speech

The Queen's speech on the coronavirus pandemic was broadcast in the UK and Commonwealth nations earlier in April, after which she intended to check in with each of their political leaders.

New Zealand has in recent days reportedly reduced its new case count to single digit numbers. As a result, the country is beginning to relax lockdown measures - and Ardern no doubt had promising news to share with the Queen during their call.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, meanwhile, remain at Windsor Castle amid England's lockdown orders.
