Theron says that she "spent a lot of time" considering immortality

Theron told Kotb that working on The Old Guard did in fact make her think about the topic of immortality more herself. "We spent a lot of time developing this project and I spent a lot of time thinking about that question," she replied.

"The conclusion that I have come up with is that I think immortality comes with a lot of pain and loneliness and suffering, and I think the film really explores that," Theron shared. As People reports, Theron then talked about how The Old Guard addresses these themes.

"You see — especially through two characters, one of them being my character — just a loneliness of walking this earth," she explained to Kotb, "and having to lose the people that you love over and over and over again. And the frustration of seeing the world not really changing."

Theron on importance of living: "what makes life matter is death"

Theron then went on to say that the concept of life not being guaranteed makes it all the more valuable to her. "I think what makes life matter is death," Theron admitted during the interview. "[It’s] knowing that we have to appreciate every second because it could all be gone tomorrow."

As People reports, The Old Guard centers on Theron's character "Andy," who's part of a group of immortal soldiers that has been "protecting the world for centuries." The movie's first trailer shows "Andy" and her fellow warriors bringing new recruit "Nile Freeman" (KiKi Layne) into their ranks.

Since these ageless warriors are required to maintain covert operations— which becomes more difficult as the years have passed— they end up finding themselves faced with "a new enemy, who wants to unlock the secrets of their DNA and weaponize them."
