Clint Eastwood has lined up his next film, in which he'll serve as director and star. The icon, who recently turned 90, will adapt adventure novel Cry Macho, according to a Deadline report. It would be a rare new acting role for Eastwood, who's primarily served as a director on recent titles such as Richard Jewell, Sully, and American Sniper. Here's what's known about his new film.

Clint Eastwood's prolific film career will continue into his 10th decade of life.

At age 90, the movie legend has signed on for his next film, according to Deadline. Eastwood will star in and direct Cry Macho, an adaptation of an adventure novel set in Mexico during the '70s.

According to Deadline, Cry Macho's plot follows Eastwood as "a onetime rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who, in 1978, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man's young son home and away from his alcoholic mom.

"Crossing rural Mexico on their back way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman may find his own sense of redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man."

The industry outlet adds that Eastwood is already scouting shooting locations and the film could see a release "by next winter," owing to the director's reputation for quick shoots.

Now a nonagenarian, Eastwood has in recent years shifted to acclaimed work behind the camera rather than as a star. He did act in 2018 film The Mule, which he also directed, but that was his first role since 2012's Trouble with the Curve, and 2008's Gran Torino before that. Cry Macho reads as another reflective, emotional journey role for the longtime actor-director.

In 2019, the legendary Western actor directed Richard Jewell, keeping with his pace of about one film per year in the 2010s. Fans of the Unforgiven and Dirty Harry actor will want to keep Cry Macho in mind as we move into 2021.
