Dexter fans will be excited to learn that the popular crime show is getting a rebirth on television! As Entertainment Tonight shares, on Wednesday it was announced that there are plans in the works for a Dexter limited series on Showtime— and the show's original lead, Michael C. Hall, is set to star!

Dexter limited series to start filming in early 2021

Dexter had a successful eight-season run beginning in October 2006, with Hall receiving five Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe for his role as the titular character. The show centered on "Dexter Morgan," who worked for the Miami police department by day and operated as a serial killer by night.

As Entertainment Tonight mentions, Hall is reteaming with the series' showrunner Clyde Phillips for the 10-episode miniseries, which is currently expected to start filming sometime early next year! Showtime is said to be looking at having it air in the fall of 2021, meaning that if all goes to plan, fans will have about a year to wait until they get to see Hall reprise the iconic "Dexter"!

Dexter reboot said to be "truly worthy" of the show

Dexter's revival was addressed by Gary Levine, Co-President of Entertainment at Showtime Networks, who made a statement about why they chose to bring the series back now! "Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago," he said.

"We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series," Levine continued. "Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world!"

It is not yet known if any of the other original Dexter cast members will be back for the show's return, which was also announced on social media. "Surprise Motherf**er," the official Showtime account for the show tweeted. "He’s back. #Dexter". We look forward to seeing what comes of this exciting reboot!
