'Dirty Dancing' Sequel Starring Jennifer Grey Confirmed
It's now official! A Dirty Dancing sequel starring Jennifer Grey is happening. Grey was attached to produce and star in a long-rumoured "dance film" — and it's now been confirmed that it is, in fact, a sequel to 1987's Dirty Dancing. Read on to learn the new details that have emerged about the sequel.
Dirty Dancing fans can now rest assured: "Baby" is returning to the big screen in the near future.
Last month, news had broke that Jennifer Grey, star of the original 1987 Dirty Dancing, had signed on to produce and star in an unspecified "dance" movie with Lionsgate. Now, on Thursday, Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer confirmed that the project is, in fact, a sequel to Dirty Dancing.
New Dirty Dancing movie to star Jennifer Grey
There was rampant speculation that Grey's new dance project—which teamed her with the studio that owns the rights to Dirty Dancing—was the long-awaited sequel. But Feltheimer has finally confirmed the news, telling Deadline that the new Dirty Dancing movie is "one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood."
Grey, now 60 years old, will star in the film, which has Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, 50/50) and Gillian Bohrer attached to co-direct.
Fans have reason to believe that the sequel will stay true to the beloved 1987 film, too. Feltheimer added: "It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise's fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the Company's history."
Dirty Dancing sequel finally confirmed
Dirty Dancing's devoted fanbase will at last get a sequel to the 1987 romantic dance drama that starred Grey and the late Patrick Swayze. The original film was a box office hit whose popularity carries on today. It also won an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Original Song ("(I've Had) the Time of My Life"), while Swayze and Grey received Golden Globe nominations for their performances.
A prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, was released in 2004, and a TV movie remake followed in 2017. Grey turned down an unspecified role in the 2017 remake, but she's now fully on board with the official upcoming sequel. Few other details are known about the new film at this time.
