A new version of Dune has been in the works for some time now. Following the 1984 David Lynch film, it's the second adaptation of the classic Frank Herbert sci-fi novel. Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) helms the new film with an all-star ensemble cast.
But we've just now received a preview of the film! Vanity Fair exclusively revealed the first look, which shows star Timothée Chalamet as protagonist "Paul Atreides." Check it out below!
Dune 2020 remake: The first look at star Timothée Chalamet
Fans of the novel have pointed out that "Atreides" appears to be on his home planet of Caladan, rather than Arrakis - the novel's main site of conflict - in the image.
Along with Chalamet, other stars in the film's ensemble cast include Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skargård, Javier Bardem, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Rebecca Ferguson.
Dune is scheduled for a December 2020 release date, though it's still possible that it gets pushed back due to COVID-19 limitations.
Dune movie (1984): Is the remake a welcome update?
Dune was previously adapted in the 1984 film directed by David Lynch. His future Twin Peaks collaborator Kyle MacLachlan played the lead role in that version, which received a mixed to negative reception. Lynch later disowned the film due to the studio's interference and a lack of control on the final cut.
Remakes aren't always a popular decision, but the new Dune could offer a refined version of this classic of the sci-fi genre. It's expected to be released in two parts, which will each cover half of the original 1965 novel.
Hopefully we'll still see this one later in 2020! We await a first trailer before then.
