September 26, 2020 - 04:27 / Hayley Paskevich

The cast of the 1991 wedding comedy Father of the Bride has come back together for an exciting virtual reunion! Benefitting World Central Kitchen, Father of the Bride Part 3(ish) sees the beloved characters— and some new ones!— attempting to throw a Zoom wedding. Find out more here!

The Father of the Bride cast has reunited for a special short film! As Entertainment Tonight shares, Father of the Bride Part 3(ish) premiered on Friday, and it saw the Banks family getting together as wedding shenanigans ensue once again— this time via Zoom!

Father of the Bride cast returns with new additions

Father of the Bride Part 3(ish) begins with Reese Witherspoon introducing the almost half-hour-long short. Her introduction is then followed by a recap of sorts comprised of footage from the previous two Father of the Bride movies— the first of which came out in 1991— which serves to introduce the characters to those who may be unfamiliar.

Fans of the movie will be thrilled to learn that Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kieran Culkin, Martin Short, and George Newborn all reprised their characters in the reunion! There were also a few new faces joining the cast this time around, with Florence Pugh, Ben Platt, and Robert De Niro all making appearances!

Father of the Bride reunion centers on virtual wedding

The Father of the Bride short revolves around Culkin's character "Matty" and his fiancée "Rachel," who's played by Alexandra Shipp. As Entertainment Tonight shares, because the couple has been forced to postpone their wedding given the circumstances of 2020, "Matty" decides he wants to marry "Rachel" right then and there!

At first, Martin's "George" isn't happy that he won't have the chance to be the "Father of the Groom" at a lavish wedding for his son. After he accepts the idea of a Zoom wedding, "Rachel" also agrees, but under one condition— she wants her father to be able to attend as well!

FATHER OF THE BRIDE. Charles Shyer. 1991. USA. With Diane Keaton, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Kimberley Williams.

Father of the Bride reunion to benefit World Central Kitchen

Father of the Bride co-writer Nancy Meyers first suggested that the cast would be coming together for a reunion earlier this month, making it seem like something was already underway! Fans were quick to get excited by this news, even without knowing the details. The Father of the Bride Zoom reunion special— which was done in partnership with Netflix— is for a good cause too, as it benefits World Central Kitchen.

During an interview on the Today show before the short film premiered, Martin revealed that knowing that the Father of the Bride follow-up would benefit World Central Kitchen is what convinced him to be on board! "When [Meyers] said, 'What if we did one to help people in the pandemic get food?,' we said, 'That just sounds like a great idea,'" he explained. "And I cleared my schedule -- which was very busy -- and we did it."
