This is big news for Friends fans! There are still hopes that the show's HBO Max reunion will complete production by the end of this summer. Get the details below...

The Friends reunion special on HBO Max was unfortunately put on hold back in mid-March due to concerns about the coronavirus outbreak.

But now, fans of the show can take comfort in the news that the reunion is still likely to happen this summer.

WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt shared the news on Monday exclusively with Variety.

Friends reunion episode on HBO Max in summer 2020?

"We're holding out for being able to get this special done hopefully by the end of the summer, if the stars align and hopefully we can get back into production," Greenblatt told Variety.

The hope, also, is that this won't turn into a video call reunion.

"We do think there's a value to having a big, raucous live audience to experience these six great friends coming back together and we didn't want to just suddenly do it on a web call with, you know, six squares and people shooting from their kitchens and bedrooms."

At the same time, Greenblatt added that the special "may go more to a virtual route, if it is delayed too long. But at the moment, we're trying to look to the future and get this thing done in a more conventional way, and I think it's worth waiting for."

Friends cast is all-in for the reunion on HBO Max

All six of the original Friends cast members - Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry - are in for the reunion. Not too much is known about the episode, but it's expected to be unscripted.

The plan was for the reunion special to be ready for the launch of the HBO Max streaming platform, which debuts on May 27. After the delay, it appears as though a late 2020 release could still be a possibility.
