This Is Why There Are Almost No More Shocking Deaths On 'Grey's Anatomy'
The successful series Grey's Anatomy is known for its often dramatic and shocking twists and deaths. However, in recent years there were significantly less plot twists. Showrunner Krista Vernoff reveals the reason...
With 16 seasons, Grey's Anatomy is probably one of the most successful hospital series ever. For more than a decade, the events in and around the "Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital", have been broadcast on television to fans everywhere. Very often, some of our beloved main characters died from a sudden and tragic series death.
Krista Vernoff wanted to take a different direction with Grey's Anatomy
Showrunner Krista Vernoff was on Grey's Anatomy from 2007 to 2011, but then left the show for a few years before returning in 2017. After her return the shocking deaths in the show suddenly became less. By taking over the spin-off Station 19 from its third season on, Vernoff wanted to take a different direction with both series.
Us Weekly revealed that Krista Vernoff said: "On Grey’s Anatomy, I did the opposite of what we did on Station 19. There had been so many tragic deaths for so many years on Grey’s Anatomy that I felt like the most surprising thing I could do, repeatedly, was to not kill someone"
Grey's Anatomy's shocking deaths were a matter of habit
"Time after time, no matter how many times I’ve done it, everyone, every time expects that the person who’s in danger or threatened in some way is going to die," Krista Vernofff continued.
That's why Krista thought it would be more surprising if she brought fun and humour back into the show, which has become a little rare since "Derek Shepherd" died by car accident. "Derek's" loss was just one of the many heartbreaking Grey's Anatomy series deaths that both the characters and the fans suffered from.
"That is how I feel like Grey’s has changed a little since I came back — a lot of characters who might have been dead by now are still alive!" So for viewers, her return is a cause for celebration, because now it seems they can keep their favorite characters on the show... at least for now.
