How the Grinch Stole Christmas is an American fantasy-comedy from the year 2000. The film is about the Grinch, a hairy, green creature who lives far away from civilization in a mountain cave. He hates Christmas, which is why he wants to mess up Christmas for the inhabitants of the neighboring town "Whoville". But do not worry! The film does have a very happy ending.
As a child, the "Grinch" has a very traumatic experience, which is why he hates Christmas. When he was young he was made fun of by his classmates because of his appearance, resulting in him living in his mountain cave now, instead of in "Whoville" with all the others. As all children there love Christmas, he wants to get his own festivity back by ruining the others. He disguises himself as Santa Claus and goes to "Whoville" to steal all the decorations and presents he can find. However, small "Cindy Lou Who" manages to get the "Grinch" liking Christmas again.
"Cindy Lou Who" realizes that the "Grinch" is not as evil as he appears at first glance. She sees that he is actually sad at heart instead and so "Cindy" wants to help the green man. "Cindy" persuades the Grinch to return all the Christmas presents he stole and to celebrate Christmas with the "Whos".
Taylor Momsen played "Cindy Lou Who" when she was just seven years old. After How the Grinch Stole Christmas she appeared in several films including Underdog and We Were Soldiers. Her best-known role is the one of "Jenny Humphrey" in Gossip Girl by now. Currently, Momsen has taken a break from acting to focus solely on her music career and her band "The Pretty Reckless". Her appearance has changed considerably in recent years and she now has got more of a bad girl look.
The "Grinch" and "Cindy Lou Who" become friends in the course of the film. "Cindy" persuades the rest of the "Whos" that the "Grinch" is not really evil and she is also able to get him to leave his tragic past behind.
Mayor "Augustus May Who" was one of the "Whos" who made fun of the "Grinch" when he was at school. He wants to celebrate Christmas without the "Grinch", but when "Cindy" invites him to the annual Christmas party he agrees that the "Grinch" can come. The "Grinch" was in love with "Martha Whovier" as a child as she was the only one who did not make fun of him. When "Augustus" proposes to "Martha" at the Christmas party, all the bad memories that the "Grinch" has come back to him and he is more than ever set on ruining Christmas for the "Whos".
The Mayor is played by Jeffrey Tambor. The diligent actor has already featured in more than 120 TV shows and movies. Tambor's most famous parts have been in the movies "Hellboy" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the TV shows "Larry Sanders Show" and "Arrested Development". For his part in "Larry Sanders Show" Jeffrey Tambor has even been nominated for not any less than six Emmy Awards.
All the "Grinch's" old feelings come back at the Christmas party in town. It is a huge blow that the one "Who" who always made fun of him when they were children now proposes to his great love of all the women in "Whoville".
"Martha May Whovier" is played by Christine Baranski. The actress has starred in numerous films including Legal Eagles and Mamma Mia!. She has had a recurring role in The Big Bang Theory since 2009 and also starred as one of the leading roles in The Good Wife from 2009 until 2016. Due to her stunning acting-talent, Baranski has been nominated for eight Emmy Awards already.
In 1983 Christine Baranski married the actor Matthew Cowles. The couple remained married until his death in 2014. Baranski has two daughters.
"Cindy Lou Who's" family are big fans of Christmas. Her mother "Betty", her father "Stu" and her two brothers "Drew" and "Lou" do everything in their power making it an extra special occasion. But young "Cindy" realises that Christmas is about so much more than just expensive presents and lavishly decorated houses.
Bill Irwin played "Cindy's" father "Stu". Irwin has starred in many films and series such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hot Shots!. He is also a critically acclaimed theatre actor and received a Tony Award for Best Actor in the play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
He has been married to Martha Roth since 1990 and the couple has one child together.
Molly Shannon played "Cindy's" mother "Betty". Her acting debut, however, was in the 1989 film The Phantom of the Opera already. She starred in Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2001 and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance on the same show.
Molly Shannon has appeared in countless films and TV series throughout her career, including Bad Teacher, Scary Movie and Evan Almighty. She is married to Fritz Chesnut since 2004 and has two children.
T. J. Thyne played "Cindy's" older brother "Stu". Thyne has appeared in the film What Women Want and has had guest appearances in Home Improvement, Charmed and The O.C. He also played " Dr. Jack Hodgins" in the hit TV series Bones from 2005 until 2017.
Clint Howard is one of the smallest actors in Hollywood. He is just five and a half feet tall and therefore often plays unusual roles. One of those roles is the one of "Whobris" in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Howard started acting in 1963 and has starred in countless films and series since, including Star Trek, Apollo 13, Halloween and Austin Powers.
Josh Ryan Evans played the eight-year-old "Grinch". As a young child Evans was diagnosed with a form of dwarfism, which is why he was only 97 centimetres tall. In 1996 he had his first acting role in Family Matters. He also appeared in Ally McBeal and 7th Heaven.
Evans suffered from health problems throughout his life and had to undergo open-heart surgeries three times. In August 2002 then, Evans died from complications resulting from the third of these operations.
