J.J. Abrams has recently discussed his reactions to reading Rian Johnson's script for The Last Jedi. He now revealed which scene from Episode VIII actually surprised him the most!

J.J. Abrams, in an interview with the local network FOX 5 D.C., has now revealed which scene from The Last Jedi actually surprised him the most. It turns out it was not "Kylo Ren" (Adam Driver) killing "Supreme Leader Snoke", which was the surprise twist of the movie.

The director of the upcoming The Rise of Skywalker was in fact rather stunned when "Finn" (John Boyega) killed off "Captain Phasma" (Gwendoline Christie). He told FOX 5 D.C. that he loved how Johnson "was just subverting expectations everywhere you looked" in his approach to the Star Wars saga.

J.J. Abrams: Hidden criticism of Rian Johnson?

" [...] weirdly, for me, the thing that was the most surprising was 'Phasma' dying … that was one of those characters I thought was [there for] something else," Abrams continued. "[...] I guess for me the biggest surprise, weirdly, was 'Phasma' dying the way she did."

Although he doesn't say it directly, it sounds a little bit like hidden criticism by Abrams fellow writer and director Rian Johnson. Abrams basically lays out that "Phasma's" death did not have the dramatic impact on the story like - for example - "Kylo" killing his father "Han Solo" (Harrison Ford) had in The Force Awakens.

"The story that we're telling, the story that we started to conceive when we did Force Awakens, was allowed to continue," Abrams added. "Episode VIII didn't really derail anything that we were thinking about." That will certainly delight all Star Wars fans! Now, we'll just have to wait and see how Abrams concludes the "Skywalker" saga in The Rise of Skywalker.

Star WarsThe Rise of Skywalker will be released on December 20, 2019.
