The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected the entire world and may have long-term effects. It has definitely altered the film industry. For the first time, major film studios are releasing their films online first before theaters.

COVID-19's Effect On The Movie Industry

For the first time in history, major film studios have broken protocol and have begun releasing films online before theaters. This is a wild development in the world of cinema and will definitely have lasting effects.

For now, most theaters have delayed release dates of their bigger investment films like Universal Studios' Fast and Furious 9, but they have begun to test the waters of online releases with great success.

Universal Studios announced it will continue to have both online and theater releases due to the success of Trolls World Tour. It earned more in 3 weeks than its predecessor did in 5 months and the Studio did not have to share the earnings with other studios. Unfortunately, this infuriated AMC Theaters who decided to sever ties with Universal and refused to further show their films at their studios even when the theaters re-open.

Many believe the Coronavirus pandemic has only fast-forwarded what was supposed to happen in the film industry. Now companies like Disney have begun to test the exclusive release of their films on their streaming platform. A few films are still set to be released in the summer to test the market when businesses begin to re-open.

Disney's CEO Bob Chapek suggested there has "got to be incredible pent-up demand" for theater-going experiences but has released Frozen II and Onward early via Disney+.
