Filming for the new season of NCIS has just started. The showrunner already gave us a little insight into the new episodes and reveals that we can expect a longer time jump. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season of NCIS...

Season 18 of NCIS has many surprises in store for viewers. As already known, the series will travel back in time for the 400th anniversary episode to see the early life of young "Gibbs" at NCIS. However, this will not be the only time leap.

NCIS showrunner reveals what's behind "Gibbs'" mission

NCIS showrunner Steve Binder told TVLine that there will be a story that is shown over several episodes and will take place in the past. More specifically, the series travels back to the beginning of season 17. At that time "Gibbs" disappeared for an episode and returned without explanation but with a black eye.

"We are going to pick up Season 18 with that mission that Gibbs was on, back in time," explained Binder, adding: "We’re in a pre-COVID world for a little while." Although the episodes, which are written to have happened in November and December 2019, will focus on "Gibbs", the NCIS team will also be shown.

Coronavirus is an issue in the new NCIS season

After the journey into the past, the series arrives back in the present - in the middle of the coronavirus crisis. Binder thus confirmed that the pandemic will play a role in NCIS, however, those episodes might not air until February.

NCIS season 18 probably won't flashback right away, after all, the 400th episode - the second episode of the new season - should continue to be celebrated as an anniversary and delve even deeper into "Gibbs'" past.

When exactly the new episodes will be broadcast is not yet certain, but it is expected that the season premiere will take place in November of this year.
