On Thursday, it was announced that a brand-new Pixar short called Out is coming to Disney+! Find out what makes it so important, and watch the official teaser trailer!

Disney+ has produced quite a unique slate of original content since the streaming platform launched late last year, and their newest offering is no exception! On Thursday, Disney+ and Pixar announced via social media that their brand-new short Out would be coming to Disney+ on May 22.

"This just IN from Pixar’s #SparkShorts: Out," Pixar tweeted. "Streaming tomorrow, May 22 on #DisneyPlus." And as PinkNews shares, the release of Out is highly anticipated by the LGBTQ+ community, as the animated short will be the first project from Disney to feature an openly queer character at the heart of its story!

Out is the first Disney animated film to star an LGBTQ+ protagonist

Out, which is the latest in Pixar's SparkShorts series, tells the story of a man named "Greg" who's trying to come out to his parents. The trailer shows "Greg" looking at a framed photograph of himself and another man— who the photo frame identifies as "Manuel"— in a tender embrace, showing that the two are lovers.

"Just look them in the eyes and say, ‘Mom, Dad, I’m –'" "Greg" is heard saying at the start of the trailer, rehearsing the words aloud to his dog before the doorbell interrupts him. He answers the door only to find his parents standing there... while he's still holding the photograph!

The rest of the trailer shows "Greg" and his dog comically trying to hide the picture of "Greg" and "Manuel", so that "Greg's" parents don't stumble upon it before he's ready to come out to them.

Pixar allows for diverse voices in animation through SparkShorts

Pixar's social media post about the Out trailer gives hope that "Greg's" story will ultimately have a happy ending. "The latest heartwarming tale from Pixar’s #SparkShorts," they wrote in the caption. "Start streaming Out tomorrow on #DisneyPlus." The SparkShorts initiative aims "to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows," according to Pixar's website.

The Out trailer has already been receiving positive attention online, with many in the LGBTQ+ community excited about Disney and Pixar's progressive new short! "Disney, sweetie, you’re doing amazing," one Twitter user said

Another pointed out that some who aren't as open-minded will undoubtedly take issue with the short's LGBTQ+ themes. However, he doesn't see that as being a bad thing."This is gonna ruffle some feathers and I am all for it," he tweeted.
