The first season of Amazon's The Lord of the Rings television series has not even started but the show already got a renewal for a second season! This is not surprising though, in fact Amazon Studios made a 250 million-dollar deal in 2017 that included a multi-season commitment for the series.
According to Deadline, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, confirmed that a second season is in the works. The early renewal means the show will go on hiatus for between four and five months after filming the first two episodes of the first season, so showrunners and executive producers can write the scripts for the second season.
What else do we know about The Lord of the Rings Amazon series?
Amazon's The Lord of the Rings is currently in pre-production in New Zealand. What we know so far is that the upcoming show, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic, will feature actors Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, and Will Poulter as part of the main cast. The first two episodes of the series will be directed by J.A. Bayona, also known for his work on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Jason Cahill, and Gennifer Hutchison, who previously worked on The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, respectively, will be part of the writing staff of the series, which will be set in Middle Earth's Second Age before the events described in Tolkien's main trilogy The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
