My Girl is a 1991 comedy drama directed by Howard Zieff and written by Laurice Elehwany. The film, starring Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky in her feature film debut, depicts the coming-of-age of a young girl who faces many different emotional highs and lows. The film also stars Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis. It was quite successful, so in 1994 the sequel My Girl 2 came out.
“Thomas” and “Vada” are best friends and spent a lot of time together. To find out how adults feel when they kiss another person, they just go ahead and try it out themselves.
Ever since her mother died, “Vada” is living with her father “Harry”, who is a mortician and runs a funeral home. Seeing how her father deals with death every day, she shows tendencies of becoming a hypochondriac and regularly imagines that she has some deadly disease.
For her role in My Girl, Anna Chlumsky was given a MTV Movie Award and became a celebrated child star. Nevertheless, she refused some parts that she would have been really great in, otherwise we would have seen her starring in Beethoven and Lassie during the nineties. Ever since 2012, she is part of the main cast of the hilarious HBO comedy Veep, alongside Julia Louis Dreyfus!
“Thomas” is “Vada’s” best friend in the entire world. Although their kiss was just an ‘experiment’ to enter an adult mindset, he wants to be more than just friends with “Ava”, but she is more interested in their teacher, “Mr. Bixler”. Sadly, “Thomas” is stung by a bee and ultimately dies from an allergic reaction.
He was one of the most popular child actors of the early nineties. Culkin’s breakthrough had already happened in 1989, when he appeared alongside the legendary John Candy in Uncle Buck. Hits like Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York followed and only furthered his stardom. Unfortunately, he couldn’t really build on his success and he only popped up on the big screen sporadically, like in 2002, when he was featured in the film Party Monster. In 2015 and 2016, he was part of the Jim Gaffigan Show and is currently preparing to shoot a movie with his buddy Seth Green.
After having had big success in the nineties, the new millennium only saw Culkin appear in the headlines in negative ways. He had to endure his parent’s divorce and the ugly custody battle that followed when he was fourteen. Meanwhile, his father always tried to further his son’s career and that didn’t help at all. When Macaulay Culkin was 18, he married his fellow actress Rachel Miner – they were divorced only twelve months later. From 2002 to 2011, he was in a relationship with Mila Kunis. He was arrested for possession in 2004.
"Harry Sultenfuss" is a widower and funeral director who does not understand his daughter and he has been single ever since his wife died. Over the course of the film, he meets “Shelly DeVoto”, whom he hires to work at his funeral home. They become a couple, but “Harry’s” relationship with his daughter suffers. After “Thomas’” death, “Vada” accuses her father of caring more about the dead than the living.
Dan Akroyd was one of the original cast members of the famous NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, and he founded the Blues Brothers, together with John Belushi. What followed was a sold out tour and two Blues Brothers movies. He starred in countless movies, but wasn’t only seen in comedies. He also appeared in films like Driving Miss Daisy and Exit to Eden. He was last spotted in front of the camera when he had a guest role on the TV series Workin’ Moms. His greatest roles (aside from being in Saturday Night Live) were probably in the films Ghostbusters and Caddyshack. Akroyd has been married to his wife Donna Dixon since 1983, they have three daughters.
“Shelly” is the new girlfriend of “Vada’s” father. When her ex-husband turns up, along with his brother, and wants to take her RV (in which she’s living) away, “Harry” beats them up and tells them to get lost and never come back.
Her first big role was when she starred in the 1978 thriller Halloween, more horror films followed soon after. She was then cast in Trading Places in 1983, which was finally a different genre for her to excel in. She was in a lot of movies all through to the 1990s, like True Lies and Halloween H20. Her last appearance in front of the camera was a role on the successful TV show Scream Queens. Curtis also writes children’s books and has had some success in that department as well. She has been married to fellow actor Christopher Guest since 1984, they have two adopted children.
Initially, “Vada” does not like her father’s new girlfriend, since she’s still hurting from the loss of her mother. But eventually, she accepts “Harry” and “Shelly” as a couple and the new woman in her life starts to grow on the little girl. When the two get married, she is very happy for her dad!
“Vada” has a crush on her teacher “Dr. Bixler”, played by Griffin Dunne. To spend more time with him, she signs up for a creative writing course, which is actually only supposed to be for adults. To pay for the class, she steals money from “Shelly”, her father’s new girlfriend.
Griffin Dunne has been working as an actor since 1975. He first got noticed when he appeared in the 1981 film American Werewolf. He has since starred in films such as 40 Days, 40 Nights and Dallas Buyers Club. Since 2016, he stars in the Amazon Original series I Love Dick, together with Kevin Bacon and Kathryn Hahn. He has been nominated for an Academy Award, as well as a Golden Globe.
