There's a new biopic in the works about iconic singer Whitney Houston, which has been given the go-ahead from her estate! It's named after one of her songs, and said to be the "ultimate celebration" of her life and career. Here's what we know!

Whitney Houston is getting an exciting new movie made about her life, which comes with the blessing of her estate! As Entertainment Tonight confirms, Houston's biopic is called I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and plans to take its audience on "an emotional, energetic journey through her career and music."

Houston biopic has director and screenwriter attached

Whitney Houston's biopic may still be in pre-production, but its key creative team has already been announced! As Entertainment Tonight shares, Stella Meghie— who directed this year's romantic drama The Photograph— is set to helm I Wanna Dance With Somebody

The project's screenwriter, Anthony McCarten, already has found success in the genre through his previous work. That's because McCarten wrote the screenplay for 2018's Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody! The movie went on to earn more than $900 million worldwide, also earning its star Rami Malek an Oscar for his portrayal of the Queen frontman.

Houston to be depicted in "a way we've never seen her"

"Whitney just makes you want to get out of your seat and sing and dance! She is anthemic in every way," TriStar's Nicole Brown said of Houston's legacy. "Anthony McCarten has bottled that up in his masterful screenplay bringing this beloved legend to life in a way we've never seen her -- funny, exhilarating, aspirational, complex and incredibly human."

"Add to that Stella Meghie, a diehard fan, who is so gifted at telling beautiful, modern, feminine tales," Brown continued, as she enthused about the "dream team" that helped her bring to life "the ultimate celebration of Whitney's incredible life and musical achievements." Entertainment Tonight also mentions that Houston's sister-in-law and estate executor Pat Houston is on board, as well as Primary Wave Music's Clive Davis and Larry Mestel.

Houston's whole story said to have "not yet been told"

Houston has had several biopics made about her over the years, but none as revealing as this one! Davis made a statement about what makes I Wanna Dance With Somebody so special. "From all my personal and professional experience with Whitney from her late teenage years to her tragic, premature death," he said, "I know the full Whitney Houston story has not yet been told."

"I am so glad that Anthony McCarten has committed to a no holds barred, musically rich screenplay that finally reveals the whole Whitney whose vocal genius deeply affected the world," he continued, "while she bravely battled the demons that were to be her undoing."

Houston was posthumously inducted into the National Recording Registry in March, alongside the likes of Dr. Dre and Tina Turner. And while I Wanna Dance With Somebody won't be released until fall 2022, there's a biopic about another iconic singer that will hit theatres much sooner! That's because the Aretha Franklin biopic Respectwhich star Jennifer Hudson recently talked about is set to come out early next year!
